Subject: FAQ FAQ 1. What are the schools like in India? All major Indian cities have international schools. Some cities have more than just one. Delhi , Bombay , and Chennai have American Schools while Bangalore and Hyderabad have International Schools. The International schools prepare children for the IB and IGCSE as well as A and O level examinations for High School. The medium of instruction is English. 2. What are the medical facilities like? The doctors in India are among the best in the world. Medicines are freely available. Where India needs improvement is in the nursing and aftercare in hospitals. Nursing is not of the highest standard. 3. Why do I need a driver? The roads are narrow and the traffic is chaotic. It is not easy to negotiate these roads and parking is almost impossible. Occasionally expats do summon up the courage to drive their own cars in familiar localities. 4. How do I deal with household help? Maids do not like to be treated with informality. They prefer that the boss and subordinate boundaries be well demarcated. Like all people they like and appreciate respect. 5. Should I buy or rent cars? Leasing cars works out to be very expensive. Long term hiring is quite viable until one can decide on what kind of vehicle is required. 6. How do I start up a venture in India? Should we buy/rent office space right away? We recommend the use of a large business center for a few months. It takes the pressure off of buying or renting office premises. Real estate is a complicated and competitive business so one needs to take one’s time and get expert advice. 8. What surprises Indians expatriates who come to work in U.S. ? The amount of business done over the telephone rather than having face-to-face interactions is a surprise to many Indians on assignment in the US . The use of the telephone to leave long messages and/or to make decisions is a dramatic change in business practices. Related to this is the dash for the telephone or computer to check messages during breaks at meetings or conferences rather than spending the time building relationships.
